The Mass Media |
Mass Media is a system of communication. It is a means of communicating with the mass of people in the world. The modern mass media include books, newspapers, films, recordings, television, radio, magazines and recordings. The mass media has brought a drastic change in our lives. Johannes Gutenberg first made Mass Communication possible with the invention of the printing press in 1456. ![]() Before the age of radio, telephone, or television, people communicated in different ways. Most common were the town criers, forerunners of today\'s television news anchors. In medieval times, these loud-voiced representatives of the king wandered town streets literally shouting the news. Another was the runner. They existed during the 18th century and rode horses. Runners and criers helped spread the news massively.1 Drum beats were used in some parts of the world. Celebrities are the products of the mass media industry. This concept was expanded when technology in mass media made possible the duplication and distribution of images. Celebrities fulfill the needs of the audience, the craving for fantasy. ![]() Photography came about in 1835 when William Henry Fox Talbot, set small boxes containing a lens and sheets of paper covered with silver halide chemicals about the lawns of his British estate. He waited for half an hour and brought the boxes inside and opened their doors and inside each was a miniature picture of the object, which had been placed. This brought a revolution as pictures were transferred all over the world. ![]() Television was invented in 1939. The credit is given to many for this invention. It brought a big change in our lives as T.V. played a big role of informing and entertaining. Television has changed the concept of news more than any invention since the printing press. It introduced the idea of national news. Advertising has been around for a long time but no one knows exactly when it was started. Before the nineteenth century most advertising was merely informative. Pavlov\'s "conditioned reflex" was applied to advertising in 1920. The concept of motion pictures began in the seventeenth century. But Thomas Edison and his assistant his assistant Thomas Armat and William Dickson who perfected the motion picture. In the 1930\'s Warner Brother\'s was the first movie with a few spoken dialogue and words. ![]() Radio had the potential to unite the nation and create national news, but it\'s impact was limited as it required the listener to use imagination. The first to use to strengthen the image of the president was Franklin D. Roosevelt, former President of the United States. Newspapers came with the industrial revolution in the late 1800\'s. The invention of the linotype(a machine that produces each line of type in the form of a solid metal slug) and high-volume presses enabled newspapers to become a truly mass medium. Johannes Gutenberg\'s Printing Press has changed the way we communicate today. Before we had television, newspapers, radio and motion pictures, there were the runners and criers who delivered news to the mass. The development of new technology has changed the way we communicate today. |
